Chapter 6: Treating ED – Dietary Supplements

Propionyl-L-Carnitine

Amino acids are naturally produced in our bodies and help us produce protein. Propionyl-L-carnitine is one of those amino acids. Carnitine is an amino acid that comes in a few forms like acetyl-L-carnitine and L-carnitine. It has not been determined whether all of these forms of Carnitine are beneficial when they are combined. More must be learned about interchanging these forms of amino acids so, for now, keep your carnitines separate.

This amino acid is used to treat pain in the legs that is caused by peripheral vascular disease. This is a disease that causes bad blood circulation. This condition is usually brought upon by hardening of the arteries or diabetes. Congestive heart failure is also treated by this amino acid.

If a man’s ED is caused by diabetes or peripheral vascular disease; propionyl-L-carnitine combined with medications can be an effective treatment. Men who are aging and develop ED because of a testosterone deficiency can combine this amino acid with acetyl-L-carnitine to treat it. This is the same combination of amino acids that treats chronic fatigue syndrome.

Doctors generally give propiony-L-Carnitine to their patients who are suffering from peripheral vascular diseases through an IV. It is effective in helping people who suffer from PVD recover from injuries. It is also used to treat chest pain and various heart problems.

What It Does:

It is a building block of energy in the body. This amino acid gives the body more energy to treat and prevent heart problems and helps maintain proper muscle movement by increasing circulation in the body.

Recommended Dosage:

If you are treating ED; take 2 grams of Propiony-L-carnitine by mouth twice a week.

L-Arginine

This is another amino acid that is formed in the body to make protein. You can find this amino acid in chicken, fish, red meat and dairy products. It can be engineered artificially as well and used to treat medical conditions.

L-Arginine is also used to treat chest pain and congestive heart failure as well as coronary artery disease and high blood pressure. Like other amino acids; it is used to treat pain in the legs caused by bad circulation too. It is also used to treat male infertility, dementia in older people and, of course, erectile dysfunction.

Other uses of L-Arginine are to improve physical performance in athletes, strengthening the immune system and controlling high blood pressure in pregnant women. It is also used to help the kidneys restore normal function after a kidney transplant and to keep the digestive tract of premature infants from becoming inflamed.

This amino acid can also be combined with certain medications, both prescription and over the counter, to treat several conditions. It can be combined with fish oil and other additives to fight infection and helps patients recover faster after surgery. It can also be combined with other amino acids to stop rapid weight loss in AIDS patients, with ibuprofen to treat migraine headaches and with chemotherapy to treat breast cancer.

What It Does:

The body naturally converts L-arginine to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide opens the blood vessels and promotes proper blood flow. It is also successful in releasing several helpful chemicals in the body like insulin.

Recommended Dosage:

If you are treating ED; Take 5 grams per day by mouth for no more than 6 weeks. If your doses are lower; they will not work.
