Chapter 1: The HISTORY of Erectile Dysfunction
Mental and “Miracle” Healing
Treating impotence through psychological means dates all the way back to the fourth century. Primitive doctors would tell their patients to read love stories to help excite them. They believed that, if you surrounded a man with beautiful people or gave him erotic stories to read that he could be on his way to being cured of impotence.
In Ancient Rome; an impotent man would wear a special amulet or charm to defend him from the horrors of impotence. They would wear talismans like the tooth of a crocodile that was said to help a man get an erection. Some Roman men would even wear a replica of a penis around their necks to protect themselves from impotence.
In the 1800’s; some believed that impotence was caused by magic and men should perform certain rituals to defend themselves against it. One such ritual practiced in France involved the man urinating through his wedding ring. He would either have to urinate or pour wine into either his wedding ring or through the keyhole of the chapel where he got married.
There began to be some breakthroughs in the mental treatment of impotence around the 1960s. These treatments involved using what we had learned about impotence thus far and turning that knowledge into effective mental practices to reduce the problem. Doctors would teach the importance of using masturbation and experimenting with orgasms to overcome negative conditioning that may have been causing their impotence. They would tell their patients not to stress about anything like penis size or performance anxiety because we are sexual beings and it is our instinct to have intercourse.
Doctors were finally beginning to see that we were looking too hard in the wrong direction. Men were just beginning to learn how easy it was to cure a problem that they used to think was so hopeless. This is when it ceased being called impotence and the more accurate “Erectile Dysfunction” term started being used. Some doctors who discovered how much stress contributed to erectile dysfunction would tell their patients not to concern themselves so much with their partner’s satisfaction. They believed that this was a preoccupation that was distracting them from having proper orgasms.
Erectile Dysfunction is Not the End of the World
Some men view Erectile Dysfunction as a devastating ailment, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are having temporary problems with sustaining an erection; you are still a man. Sex is not the most important thing in life. The more you stress about it; the more you allow your condition to continue. Approaching your treatment stress free with the belief that it will work for you is crucial to your efforts to eliminate erectile dysfunction.
